Bed bugs expert reveals how to spot signs of infestation

While bed bugs are currently “widespread” in Paris, fears have been raised they could make it to London.

Speaking to The Independent, David Cain, founder of Bed Bugs LTS and a qualified microbiologist, said bed bugs would definitely be able to survive the journey.

He said: “I have known people go on day trips to Paris, not even staying in hotels or other high-risk activities, and come back with them.

“Paris has been a popular link for the last six years.”

This means the pests that can be found anywhere in the house, from mattresses to drawers, could leave Brits with nasty bites.

Fortunately, Navin Khosla, Pharmacist at Now Patient, shared what to do if you get bitten by the tiny insects.

Khosla said: “This can be anything from a slight itch or irritation to an allergic reaction, therefore knowing what to do when you have been bitten is crucial, especially with the growing prevalence of the insect across public areas as well as in the home.

“If bitten, apply a cold compress to reduce inflammation, also be sure to disinfect the area with salt water or disinfectant wipes to reduce the risk of infection.

“You also should try your best to not scratch or break the bitten skin, utilising sting cream and anti-histamines can help here.”

However, the pharmacist recommended contacting GP if you are experiencing more severe reaction.

“It could be an allergy, infection or something else entirely,” Khosla added.

How to reduce risk of bringing bed bugs from public transport to your home

Trains are some of the places where bed bugs have been spotted in France.

With the growing threat of bed bugs on public transport, the pharmacist recommended keeping any clothes worn outside separate from your fresh clothes.

The expert added: “Be sure to wash them on a hot wash before risking an infestation in your home.

“Storing them in a plastic bag can be a good way of avoiding a potential spread when waiting to wash the items.”
