Steph McGovern’s next big TV move exposed after sudden Channel 4 axe

Steph McGovern is reportedly gearing up to host This Morning or make a return to BBC Breakfast following the axing of her Channel 4 show.

The 41-year-old had been on the BBC show along with presenters Naga Munchetty, Dan Walker and Sally Nugent for eight years before quitting in 2019 to front her own Channel 4 show, Steph’s Packed Lunch.

The daytime series launched in 2020, but after three years it was recently confirmed by the broadcaster that the live show has been given the boot and the last episode will air in December 2023.

But according to Dom Aldworth, Head of Brand Marketing at Slingo, the presenter will not be off air for long and she will be back on BBC or replace Holly Willoughby on This Morning.

“With her experience on daytime TV discussing daily news and trends, Steph has become a top contender in the rumours surrounding Holly Willoughby’s replacement,” he said.

“This speculation has only increased following Steph’s refusal to rule out stepping into Holly’s role at This Morning.

“Moving from Channel 4 to one of their top competitors, ITV would be a significant career move for Steph. With This Morning averaging around 900,000 viewers daily.”

He also claimed to Daily Star Steph could also be on her way back to BBC Breakfast, which she hosted from 2010 until 2019.

“Having previously hosted BBC Breakfast up until 2019, it could be possible BBC bosses are eyeing Steph up for a potential return,” he said. “With Steph already knowing many of the hosts, it could be an attractive and familiar opportunity for the on-screen star.”

The Steph Show was launched in March 2020 and broadcast from Steph’s home due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was an instant hit and was briefly off the air before returning that summer as Steph’s Packed Lunch.

A Channel 4 spokesperson told Express.co.uk that they’re proud of everything Steph’s Packed Lunch has achieved since launching in the 41-year-old’s living room back in lockdown.

Praising the companies that made the show, the channel said: “We’re so grateful to Steph, Expectation, Can Can and the brilliant production team for creating a show that kickstarted our growth in the north of England.”

The broadcaster went on to pay homage to Steph as they stated the host brilliantly reflected the views and preoccupations of the country.

Not only did the show entertain the nation during the week, Channel 4 highlighted it was a springboard for developing local talent behind the scenes.

Touching on the decision to axe the popular show, they continued: “However, with audience habits changing quicker than ever, we have to make difficult decisions about which programmes to invest in to best drive our digital-first strategy.

“We have decided not to recommission Steph’s Packed Lunch when its existing production contract ends in December 2023.”

Steph’s Packed Lunch continues until December on Weekdays on Channel 4 from 12pm.
